Most DHDS dance books and recordings are produced for the society's annual summer schools. The books are based on research by the teachers and usually contain background information, step descriptions, dance instructions and music. The accompanying CD normally contains recordings of music for all the dances in the book, researched, arranged and recorded specially for dance practice. In addition to these, a project is underway over the next few years (starting in 2003) to develop a series of CDs covering the main periods of interest recorded to a high professional standard. These will contain a balance of dances suitable for beginners and improving dancers. Two of these are now available: Ballare et Danzare and Dances of Court and Country. In addition Cherwell Thy Wyne (2013) publishes research by Ann and Paul Kent on the dances from the 15th-century English Gresley manuscript, with a high-quality accompanying CD by The York Waits.
Samples from some of the recordings are provided, shown by the gramophone icon. They are typically 1 minute long, are in MP3 format and heavily compressed to reduce download times; each file is around 250 Kbyte.
Newer samples are 20-30 seconds long in high quality MP3 files, typically about 500 KByte.
The publications are arranged below in approximate chronological order of the material contained.

The 'Gresley' manuscript is a small notebook written by John Baynes belonging to the Gresley of Drakelow family papers and held in the Derbyshire Record Office at Matlock, dated to c. 1500. As far as is known, it is the only extant English dance record of its type.
This book contains is the product of extensive research by Ann and Paul Kent. It contains an overview of the manuscript, a guide to the performance of the dances, detailed descriptions of the steps, transcriptions of the text, melody lines and full dance instructions for all 26 of the dances for which choreographies are given in the manuscript.
The CD has music for all the dances with other tunes from the manuscript and specially written tunes for dances where no music is given. It has been designed to match the dances in the book, as well being excellent listening.

Jane Austen's brother Henry recorded that 'Jane was fond of dancing, and excelled in it'. The ballroom and assembly scenes in her novels were based on first-hand experience, but she rarely specified the dances. The selection given here goes a little closer to the dances she knew, particularly by making fuller use of the Austen family music books than before. It includes a selection of cotillons and country dances from the ballroom repertoire.
