De la arte di Ballare et Danzare

We invite you to join us to explore original dances from the earliest extant Italian treatises in their cultural, social and musical contexts. These intriguing choreographies give expression to Renaissance magnificence, courtly love, dance games, moresche and early commedia.

What to look forward to

Our tutors

Bruna Gondoni has extensive knowledge of early dance and music. She directs the Italian Renaissance Dance Company "Il Ballarino" founded by Andrea Francalanci, and has danced with the "Compagnie Ris et Danceries" and with Francine Lancelot. A choreographer of considerable experience, she has also performed at the Utrecht and the Sablé Festivals and taught in Geneva, Monaco and Madrid. Her advanced class will enjoy a selection of dances from the 15th century Italian courts.

Hazel Dennison has many years of teaching, research and dance experience, including work in further and higher education, theatre arts schools, theatre in education, dance groups, heritage programmes and summer schools. Her current focus is on 15th and 16th century Italian sources. Her class will consolidate Domenico's criteria for the practice and perfection of good dancing, his steps and embellishments and his choreographic use of the four misure. These will be developed in a range of dances from the 15th century repertoire at an intermediate level, but suitable for those new to the period with some dance experience.

Jørgen Schou-Pedersen studied the Science of Music at the University of Copenhagen. He has studied the history of dance with many expert dancers, but also researched the primary sources himself. He teaches historical dance at the National Theatre School and the Royal Music Conservatory in Copenhagen and has given courses in many European countries and choreographed for stage, film and TV. He runs two performing dance groups. Jørgen's class, suitable for beginners to intermediate students, will work on a selection of not too difficult choreographies from the late 15th and early 16th century Italian sources.
